Nativity Fort

  • One of the few military buildings in Panama, protecting the western entrance to the city over Matadero Bridge
  • Constructed in the 17th century (possibly1658)
  • Only housed 12 soldiers and four cannons (another source suggests 50 men and 6 cannons)
  • In 1950s and 1960s several reconstruction works did not document the interventions, but the southern wall is probably the oldest
  • It is quite possible that Henry Morgan and his pirates entered the city by crossing the bridge and attacking this fort
