• 1908 – Opened on the site that originally housed an 18th century monastery, which became military barracks

  • Now includes the Teatro Nacional
  • Recent restoration removed up to 14 layers of paint to reveal lavish decorations
  • Painted in original colours, as required of public buildings at the time
