La Conception Convent

  • Founded in 1598 by four nuns from Lima
  • Seat of the only female religious congregation in Panama
  • First constructed of wood, it was later being rebuilt of stone when the pirates attacked, but it was never finished
  • Served as a girls school
  • The grounds came to occupy two blocks of the city, or about 6800 m2
  • Badly damaged by the earthquake of 1621
  • Most of the ruins were part of the church – little remains of the convent
  • A cistern was included in the grounds
  • You can climb some stairs to see more
  • Now used as a reception space for visitors and activities such as concerts
